Moving mail from Gmail to Google Apps

I have a bunch of mail in an old Gmail account and today I decided to merge it into my Google Apps account that I now use. Previous methods I was using for moving mail was through IMAP but after looking around I found out Google’s Email Uploader. Google Email Uploader uploads mail to Google Apps from your email client (Outlook, Outlook Express or Thunderbird). To trick it into moving mail from Gmail I setup my Gmail account to accept IMAP connections and used Outlook to connect to it.

  1. The uploader does work well. Takes a while, but it is definitely worth the wait. The search features are unbelievable. We’ve completely retired Outlook. Have a good one. How’s the weather in France?

  2. Weather is cold right now but I guess that is normal for the season ;-). It’s true that Outlook doesn’t add much and I’ve converted all my family and in-laws to Google App with personalized domain names. It took some time but it was well worth it and seeing the new feature popup from Google I think it was the right choice (IMAP, Exchange ActiveSync…).
